Josi -- they are grey! Beyond that it would be nice to know what it is you want to know, what model you are inquiring about, and what you intend to push with it.

Yamaha, as a rule, makes the best outboards on the market. Try a Search. There'll be Megabytes of previous conversations. :) And Welcome to iboats.

Re: Yamaha 4 stroke

Sorry about the evasive answer but I was so wrapped with my current dilemma that I just through a question out there. To make a long story short....we were burned with a 2004 250 HPDI. When I say burned I mean we bought it in July 2005, 64 hrs on it and its the powerhead already. After searching these forums apparently it's a known problem and they can go through as many as 3 powerheads. Yamaha chose to keep selling them off the shelves knowing it's an "anchor" as one Yamaha dealer put it. We paid $15k for it and they want to give us $11k to trade in on a 4-stroke. We'll take the 4-stroke if that's the best deal (rather have the money to buy the Suzuki) but to lose $4k knowing they knew it was a problematic motor just makes me nuts.

Better Business Bureau says they've already settled (refund/exchange) with someone else. The details are lacking but it had to be this motor based on all my research.

So that's why I'm asking if anybody knows of any problems with this motor. Had I done this research before we never would have bought the "anchor"

Thanks, Josi

Re: Yamaha 4 stroke

dude
I have warned you on another post about getting jiggy. by the purchase contract you signed yamaha is only obligated by law to repair or replace at their option. get jiggy and hire lawyers and get the BBC involved will cause a stonewall effect.
I had a customer that popped both 200 HPDI motors on the same trip, worked a deal with yamaha to provide 2 F200's for the price difference between the MSRP from a Z200 to an F200 if the customer paid the rigging cost. however a dealer does not have that authority, the dealer can discuss it with corperate yamaha, but a dealer cannot deal like that unless the dealership is going to pay out of its pocket and thats not likly.
sounds like your dealer relationship has gone south for some reason. however I have many Z250's that go offshore each day with no problems.
some of the Z250's pop just cause but most we find pop due to improper rigging from the hull manufacturer compounded by improper pdi by the selling dealer.
that I see a lot of.
but so far the F motors seem to hold up well with no major issues, a few minor recalls here and there but overall no problems.

Re: Yamaha 4 stroke

Thanks for the advice. We sent a "NICE" letter to Yamaha To see what happens. It got worse when the dealer told us $21K for a 4-stroke with $11k trade-in. Our friend called about the exact same motor and was offered $15k with a 3-year warranty for the same motor! Dealer said they "just don't want this motor back". Then we called Ed's in VA and they said for the 250hpdi was $12k with a 5 year warranty! It just makes me sick ya know? We are holding our tempers and trying to get what we can. We're asking for a free upgrade from Yamaha....haha....we'll see...

Josi

Re: Yamaha 4 stroke

In my part of the world Yamahas are highly regarded and found in almost all of the river mouths and ports. Therefore, I would agree that these are the best motors to have, as they can be repaired by everyone.

I've read about the HPDI problems but these problems where also experienced with Evinrude FICHT's, Mercury Optimax's I've heard that some e-tec's have needed new fuel-air-spark mappins but the bottom line is that their are backed by warranties, exetended warranties and probably there is a lemon law for outboards as well.

I would have the powerhead exchanged and regard proper maintenance to keep a superbly engineered motor working at its best!
