This question was posted by Colson and some glitch made it go away.

He needs to decide on a boat purchase, whether to select a Yammy 40 4 stroke or a Johnson 40 4 stroke.

He got a reply from me that the Johnson is EFI and the Yammy, though an excellent engine, is not. I recommend the Johnny.

He got another reply suggesting the Yammy 2 stroke 40.

Please post your replies to Colson here. :)

What I'm about to tell ya is true...Down here in sunny Southwest Florida, local law enforcement folks are pulling theier hair out over recent outboard thefts..It seems the thieves are not particular of a motor's HP,whether it 2 or 4 cycle, or how old it is,(up to a point---nothing older than 1995)... But what is unique to ALL cases,is that the pukes only steal Yamahas!!
I thot it interseting enough, that I decided you should know.
My advice? If you not concerned with theft, get a Yamaha. If the mutants run rampant in your hood, get the Bombardier...They are much better than they were in 1999-2000, acording to complaint numbers here. (Honda is lowest, but there are many less Hondas sold to begin with).

12Footer, your remarks struck home. They only steal Yamaha's here, too. Whether it's from a dealer of off a boat in someone's lift or on a trailer. They do seem to favor the larger models though. The local police seem to have reason to believe they are selling them in Florida. Maybe yours are coming here for sale.

I too would go with the John/rude.
My insurance agent apprised me of another twist to this stolen motor statistic.Seems that there are numerous ones that were reported stolen by their owners and dumped in the drink for claim reasons.Particularly in florida. It is for this reason and the conventional stolen motors that it is difficult to obtain off premises theft on boats. These suspicions have been verified by independent divers working for insurance companies.

Aside from fuel induction differences, other differences (neither good nor bad) between the Johnson (Suzuki) 40 and the Yamaha F40 will be that the Johnson has an enclosed timing chain vs. Yamaha's belt drive. Both work good but Yamaha's belt supposidly needs annual inspection and replacement at 5 years (I've yet to replace one). The Johnson will also have a dual overhead cam, whereas the Yamaha has a single. The Johnson 40 will also come standard with a prop and the Yamaha won't.

Big disadvantage to the Johnson 40 is that it weighs 240+ lbs....about 60 lbs more than the Yamaha. It's even 42 lbs heavier than the Honda 40.

You'd be happy with either. Hope this helps. :D
