Replacing the prop seals on my 2006 3 cylinder 50 hp. Currently the outermost seal is 4.5 mm recessed from the outer edge of the housing. Should I repeat that or install deeper? I'm aware there are 2 seals there. Should I push the 1st seal all the way down and then the 2nd seal all the way down to the 1st seal? Thanks

Ideally you should probly refit them as per factory..... but sometimes if the shaft has wear grooves where the seal lips have been bearing on the shaft it is possible to move the seal so the lips are bearing on unworn shaft thus getting another life out of the shaft . We used to do this on F&P smart drive washing machines .

Ok I do see 2 lines on the shaft where the seals were but not deep at all. Can't feel them with your fingernail. Maybe I'll set them deeper so it's on a fresh part of the shaft. Thanks

If you cant feel them Id give the shaft a bit of a polish with some 400 carborundum paper and call it done .
Some of the grooves in the wm stainless shaft could be .25mm deep and would spoil a new ( triple lip +wiper ) seal quickly . Wm has water ( and mud ) on one side and air on the other so any leakage would accelerate wear instead of lubing the seal .:)

Some companies recommended a thin coat of compatible grease on friction area.
