Yamaha 6 h.p. removal of lower unit

I have a 1988 6 hp yamaha and I am having trouble removing the lower unit. How does the shift rod disconnect?

Above the lower unit where the transom plate starts at the back, there is an adjuster screw for the shift rod, all you do is, unscrew it downwards untill the shift rod comes off .....
