I am in the process of purchasing a trailer boat with a Yamaha 60 (1993) model through a reputable boat dealer thats also giving me a 6 month warantee on the boat and motor. Now the boat and motor dont look as though they have been used for a while and the motor seems to be in good condition. I am no mechanic so my question is:
1. What questions must I ask the dealer?
2. What must I look out for?
3. Owing to the fact that he is giving me a 6 month warantee, would this counter any problems that might occur?
4. What is the best oil to use with these motors?
5. If I wanted to upgrade to a Stainless Prop what would the best size be?

Any other useful information would be appreciated. Thanks guys, Auckland - New Zealand

Re: Yamaha 60 1993 model

I am in the process of purchasing a trailer boat with a Yamaha 60 (1993) model
----------
Hi,
Trailer, boat and outboard - right?

Yamaha 60 2-stroke 1993 - should be fine if you do not mind running 2-stroke. Yamaha has good quality on their outboards (I own a Yamaha F115 4-stroke myself). 10 yers for (a well mantained) outboard is no problem.

What boat is it (make, model and Year)?

--------
through a reputable boat dealer thats also giving me a 6 month warantee on the boat and motor.
--------
Wise, 6 month warranty seems fine.

--------
Now the boat and motor dont look as though they have been used for a while
--------
Then it is very important You make sure the outboard has been serviced very recently and make sure that the boat dealer write that down on the receipt. New impeller should be in the waterpump then, new gearcase oil, new sparkplugs, all greasing pints on the outboard greased with water resistant grease etc.
It is good if there are some receipt from previous services that old owner had so You have some sort of history on the outboard.

-------
and the motor seems to be in good condition.
-------
Good. You have looked under the cowel I assume?

--------
I am no mechanic so my question is:
1. What questions must I ask the dealer?
--------
The outbaord must be serviced very recently, very important.

---------
2. What must I look out for?
---------
All electrical in good shape like no loose cables that nobody knows where it supposed to be connected, bad connections on visable electrical vires. Make sure all electrical works like navigation ligts (if equipped with that). Steering cable smooth (might be little play in the wheel but that should be normal), throttle and gear cables in good chape and thet propeller is halted in neatral. Remember when you put in forward or reverse gear when running on water there is a little "knock" sound and that is normal and you should put in gear firmly, not slow.
Fuelbulb, fuelline and fuelfilter OK.
Make sure You get the Yamaha 60 1993 manual.
Check that speed-, rpm- and varning guage works.

Boat: make sure no visable damage in gealcoat (I assume it is a glasfiber boat) and hull is clean and smooth (both speed and fuel consumption will be bad if the hull is not clean and smooth). Make sure the stern has no cracks (could be from engine vibration etc).
Hopefully you get the boat's manual, if not you cna live with that.
That is what I can think of right now.

-----------
3. Owing to the fact that he is giving me a 6 month warantee, would this counter any problems that might occur?
-----------
6 month warantee is fine, lets hope you do not need to use it but if, then make sure the dealer start working on your case immediately and order any parts needed immediately and you check the progress so the boat just will not be at the dealer and nothing happen.

---------
4. What is the best oil to use with these motors?
---------
Any 2-stroke oil that is TC-W3 rated. You can use Yamaha "Yamalube" 2-stroke oil, or if you prefer more environmentally friendly biological degradable Castrol Biolube 100, or any othher oil that is TC-W3 rated as said.

---------
5. If I wanted to upgrade to a Stainless Prop what would the best size be?
---------
Personally I would not change propeller only because the present propeller is aluminium. Use the propeller that is on the outboard, and depending how you use the boat a propeller with a higher or lower pitch can change the rpm some (as a rule of thumb 1 pitch change alter the rpm 200 rpm). But Steel prop is probably overkill (and it is expensive). Aluminium prop is often enough.

Yamaha propeller:
http://www.yamaha-motor.com/accessories/otb/propellers01.html

Chart:
http://www.yamaha-motor.com/accessories/otb/propellers04.html

-----------------
Any other useful information would be appreciated. Thanks guys, Auckland - New Zealand
-----------------

If possible, take a ride in the boat before you buy it. Notice the top rpm at full throttle.
Should probably be around 5500 rpm.
Idle rpm should be in about 800 rpm I guess.
Make sure there is water coming out from telltale.
Basically make sure the outboard runs smooth at all rmp and has no hesitation when increase throttle.

Good luck!

/Bo
