I'm running a Yamaha 60ce on a 16' glass boat. it has a 11"1/8 x 13G prop. I have lifted the engine and to get max revs out of it but have found it over heats. I have dropped the engine down by 1.8cm.This has cured the over heating but I can only get 3000RPMs. If I put a finer prop on the engine will this bring the revs up? and what prop pitch should I be looking at?
When the engine was high it would rev to 5000 rpm.

It cruised at 50km/h at 4000 Rpm.

The boat is an old shape that starts with a decent "V" and then flatterns out at the stern. Very stable at anchor.

Re: Yamaha 60CE overheating

Sounds like you're underpowered. I'm guessing that 16' glass boat is heavy and deep-V. What HP is the boat rated for? Are you able to trim the motor up while running?

The overheating looks like it was caused by mounting the outboard too high and not getting enough water pressure to the intake.

I think the smallest prop you can get for the C60 is going to be an 11 pitch. And since this outboard should be running at 4500 rpm minimum, I don't think you'll get there with the 11. Even with a serious cupped and raked, small diameter 4-blade, you're going to be way off.

Can you get up on step? How fast does the boat go at the 3000 rpm?

My gut tells me that you may have other problems. Seems to me that a 60 should be plenty for a 16' and I would think you should get a lot more than 3K out of the prop. I'm not comfortable in suggesting what to do next other than checking spark, fuel (including carbs.) & compression.

10-4,60 ponies driving a 11 1/8 X 13 on a 16 ft glass boat should rap higher than 3000 if all is well.
