I'm considering a boat with a 2002 Yamaha 80 HP 4-stroke engine. Are there any peculiarities with this year/engine? Anything I should look out for?
Good engine? Leave it alone?
Thanks,
JD

The 80 and 100 HP engine (1596cc) back in 2002 are the same engines used today on the 75 and 90 HP (1596cc). Only difference is the newer 75 and 90 are EFI and about 15 lbs heavier. Both the 80 and 100 HP engines were excellent, and obviously good enough for Yamaha to keep onboard and update.

75/90HP were introduced for the 2003 model year.

They didn't get EFI until the 2005 model year.

Re: Yamaha 80HP 4-stroke

My brother has the 80 Yamaha 4 stroke (I believe it's an '02). It is a terrific motor. You can stand at the front of the boat and honestly not hear the engine running at idle. It is very smooth and the performance is excellent.

It has been very reliable, too. The only problem he has ever had is after the motor has been tilted up for a long period of time, the gas seems to take a while to get to the motor thus causing it not to start for a few attempts.

Otherwise, it's fine. Two weeks ago, we were in northern Michigan. Both mornings were cold and the motor started right up. It is very large, however, compared to 2 strokes. Sips gas.

Good luck!
