I have an 88 yamaha 200HP outboard that a friend wanted me to fix up and sell. It has been sitting on it's side for 6 years and was not stored properly... also it only had about 100 hours on it when taken off the boat. The engine didn't want to spin without force. Lots of marvel mistery oil and turning it once a day for a week and now it spins around fine. I hooked up the controls and connected the battery and I checked the compression (WOT)and I had 147 PSI on the top two, 142PSI on the middle two, and 120PSI on the bottom two. keep in mind it is still wet from the MM OIL-is that good? ok? Bad? I know some yamaha's have different compressions for different cylinders. if it is good, next I will rebuild the 3 dual carbs and see if she fires. Also the water pump. Any other reccomendations? I also did the gear case oil and it was clean.

its worth roughly 18 cents a pound.
the reason why it was stiff to turn is rusted shiney surfaces.
bad, very bad.
make sure you place that in the ad.
couple that with its 22 years old and your not gonna get much out of it.

I hate to disagree with you but common sense tell me with the engine not fogged properly the oils in the engine lost thier lubrication properties. thus creating a layer of of protective coating, but also with tar like characteristics. when lubed, the engine is now spinning fine with great compression- seeing how the 115hp I pulled out of the same dry temp controled enviorment that has not been run since the late 80's (it an 1985)and it had run over 120 gallons of fuel and has 140PSI accross the board- I would say you are completely wrong. I am not looking for the value- I have someone who wants it for 2500- who knows the situation... I have no doubt with these numbers it will give years of service in the conditon it is in... I was looking for suguestions beyond what I am doing to get it BACK in service correctly.

EDIT
Nice language. no breaker bar used- maybe if you asked questions- i turned with my hands. (I am a certified honda mechanic, but was looking for yamaha insight, knowing the cylinders have different compressions on different cylinder banks, what else?) I was not going to put a battery on it without lubricating the cylinders... that would be stupid. PS I had pulled the heads off to inspect the cylinder walls prior to taking on the job. Beautiful inside.

A new water pump, cleaned carbs and the engine runs like a top. the gentleman brought a cert yamaha tech with him to pick it up- and the engine was given a clean bill of health. (bolted up and tested on a 25' boston whaler and already has 8 hours on it) EDIT
