My impeller doesnt seem to pump unless the motor is immersed in the tank so that the water level is up to or above the waterpump. I think that with the motor at the correct depth in the water (about 2" deeper than the cavitation plate)the pump wont prime.

I have looked at my impeller with the idea of replacing it. It has some set on it but the ribs on the side of the vanes are intactand not worn away.

Is a new impeller likely to solve this problem ? I dont want to buy one if there is a possibility of something else wrong with the motor as they are not cheap here and I would need to evaluate whether it is worth spending money on.
Apart from the telltale, where does the rest of the water exit the motor?

The makers number is missing, just some corroded rivets. Does the number on the alloy plug in the engine block have any significance?

possibly
that impeller if worn at all wont prime if the pump housing is not submerged. pumps are a lot better at pushing than pulling. replace it with the entire kit. also carefully inspect the nylon housing for any signs of melting in the cup seat area. any melting is grounds to toss the housing.
