Yamaha 90 Gears grinding

I have a 90hp 2004 yamaha that is acting up. Whenever I shift into reverse it kind of grinds and sometimes doesn't engage all the way. Forward works just fine. Also, while in neutral (engine turned off) I can spin the prop freely with my hand but it also makes a grinding noise too like the teeth on the shaft aren't matching up well or are stripped. Anyone familiar with this problem? Won't have time to take the lower unit off until next week to check it out, just trying to get an idea of what to expect.

shifter adjustment? hmm...anyone know how to go about fixing this issue? I recently replaced this lower unit, had a cracked case and so i had my old parts into a new case, perhaps there is something I needed to adjust after i put the lower unit back in?

Re: Yamaha 90 Gears grinding

The shifter cable has an adjustment on the end of it inside the remote control box but I've not actually adjusted one since I've never had a problem with my motor. Under the cowl you can see the shift lever under the carbs and it would be the place to check first. I run a 1999 Yamaha 90HP on a 18' jon boat similar to yours and I'll be very interested to hear how you come out on this. Since you've done some work on your lower unit then maybe there's more to this than just the adjustment but that's the best place to start and hopefully that's all that's wrong. Good Luck!

One other item, when you put your lower unit back on were you sure the splines on the shifter shaft were lined up correctly? If the gears moved and you re-installed it wrong then it won't shift right. Maybe remove lower end and check again. Go to: Bogue inletnc.com/yamaha and review the instructions and photos regarding water pump impeller replacement for details regarding shifter shaft splines alignment. Could be your problem since working on lower unit. Good Luck!

Thanks for the response, and great website. Sounds like the "clicking" noise I'm hearing might be do to that shifter rod being out of alignment like you and that website have mentioned. Weird that I didn't notice it the first few times I used if after replacing the lower unit though. I'll let you know how it turns out.
