I am replacing a blown headgasket on my Yamaha F100 - 1999 year. When I removed the old had it appeared to have some type of gasket material sprayed on the head surface. The Clymer manual on these 4-strokes does not mention anything about a gasket material. Should I use something or replace the gasket dry ?

Re: Yamaha F100 Headgasket

I thought fourstrokes dont break. I didnt think the engine covers came off. They never need service. Fourstrokes are the lexis of outboards. I listen to a saleman at a boat show. Told me great stories. Oh ya He said they will last forever too.

bamafan, did you get an answer for your gasket question?

Just curious, but how many hours do you have on your F100? Ever have any starting problems after a week or two?

jhnboat

No help yet. I have had this engine since 1998, I fish almost everyday. Never had anyother issues qith the engine. Headgasket is probably my fault, I was told it needed replacing.

I would estimate around 1200 hrs. Its been very good to me. Been serviced by the book.

I don't know the specific answer to your question. A good manual which you should be using would answer it for you. In general, I would not recommend using any gasket compounds on a head gasket, UNLESS the manufacturer says so. Most do not. Head gaskets are a good deal more high-tech in the new millenium than they were in the 60's when people were putting goop on their mating surfaces. :D

bamafan,

Looking at my factory service manual there is no indication of any sealant being used with the head gasket. (F100 service manual)

Thanks to all for the help. Its back on and seems ok. Compression is 179lbs +/- 1 lb on all four cylinders. Keep your fingers crossed.
