I have twin 2002 Yamaha F115 Four strokes each with 450 hrs. I have had the boat for about 80 hours of use so I'm not sure if what is occuring is normal for motors with this amount of hours. About every 20 hours I have to add oil to both engines...I have to add about 1-2 quarts each time. Do these Yamahas four stroke engines suppose to burn some oil?? I have changed the spark plugs today so not sure if that will help..should at least help the running of the engines. Other than this I have had no issues and these motors are used in offshore conditions.

Appreciate any insight on this possible issue.

Thxs
Eric G.

Re: Yamaha F115 - Oil Usage Question

should not be "using" that much oil.
use the yamaha or merc de carbon fuel additive(ring free) then take compression readings for more info.

hello
do a leakdown test. on those engines a compression test is like teats on a boar hog. if the motor was not correctly broken in it will also use excessive oil. what RPM's do you turn them. and when you shut them down trim them up 15 or 20* to prevent oil from running past the rings after shutdown.
good luck and keep posting

jrod..should not be using that much oil...does that mean it may use some oil over time?

I typ. run the engines at cruise around 4800 rpms over a two hour period when heading out then again back in. During fishing they will stay at idle speed.

I ran them yesterday and they ran good. I have not checked the oil level yet after this last trip to see if lower. I noticed a little bit of smoke when I first started the Port engine which tends to use more oil.

E.

Re: Yamaha F115 - Oil Usage Question

You may just think it's using oil. The oil filter is mounted sideways and drains over time. If you check your oil after recently running, the filter will be full and the level will show lower than if it had been setting long enough for the filter to drain and bring the level up. It doesn't hold much, only 6 ounces or so, so the difference wouldn't be much. But there are also a few pockets in the motor that can add a few ounces to that differential amount. Moral...check the level consistantly. Either only cold after sitting, or warm after running awhile.

Re: Yamaha F115 - Oil Usage Question

Willy...thanks for the info. However, the reason I noticed was because I one morning when I was heading out my low oil alarm came on for the Port engine. I then returned to the fuel dock and added oil. This accured after about 50hrs since the last oil change when I purchased the boat and the dealer did a complete 100 hour service. Since then I have been checking and adding oil about every other trip. Not much but about 1 qt each time.

Also..when I purchased the boat I did a compression test and no issues the reading were all consistant.

Eric
