In our old I/O stern drive boat we had to make sure that the engine was flushed and free of water during the winter so that the motor didn't freeze and crack the block, etc. We now have new 21' boat with a Yamaha 150 4 Stoke. Do we still need to be concerned about wtaer remaning in the motor and freezing during the winter? Or, does it always drain out?

Thanks,

The engine is self draining if it remains vertical. If its tilted up it could be a problem.

Like upinsmoke says, you want to have it tilted down. If its tilted up, water can potentially get in, freeeze and then do damage when it expands as it thaws. When you put it up for the winter, You might want to wrap plastic around it to keep any water out. The guy that shrink wraps my boat for the winter also wraps it around the motor/lower unit to keep water out. I have the same motor as you and I do not have any problems and it gets as cold as -30 F sometimes where i live. Right now its august, so don't worry about it and go enjoy your boat.

you will notice if you run it during times below freezing you wont have a telltale right of the bat. happens with the v6's as well, its not a problem but to make sure i run it for a short time( a minute or so) then shut it down and let it heat soak the tell tale area that doesnt drain.
