Yamaha fuel level indicator

I asked this question before, but got no response, possibly because I rambled on in my previous post. The fuel level indicator on my Yami speedo goes to full when the key is turned on, no matter what the actual fuel level is. The sender is good, with resistance values of 33 and 245 ohms. Disconnect the pink sender wire and the level indicator drops to zero. All other gauge functions work like they're supposed to. The fuel level indicator goes to full when the key is in the run position.

Details: 2003 Century 2600 with twin Yami F225's. Both motors are 2003, but not original to the boat. Gauge functioned properly until recently. I removed the sender from the tank and tested it- it's OK.

Re: Yamaha fuel level indicator

on your fuel meter wiring at the back of the meter.
make sure the fuel sender pink wire(ABYC standard your actual color may vary depending on monkey rigging) is plugged into the US market white wire not the international market white/blue wire.
if all is wired correctly at the meter unplug the fuel sender pink wire from the white wire, test resistance from the pink sender wire to ground.
should fall between 33Ohms full to 245Ohms empty. if it does not find the hull issue.
to test the meter either buy a potentiometer from radio shack that can vary resistance between 0 and 300 ohms, remember you can mark the pot with a marker while setting the range with your multimeter, and hook the pot between the white fuel send wire at the meter and ground and turn the key on.
always remember the meter has a delay function built in so any pot changes you must wait, sometimes as much as 5 minutes for the meter to react.
another test involves buying a 100 Ohm resistor and a 200 ohm resisor.
install the 200 ohm resistor between the white wire and a black wire then turn the key on,after meter self test you should see close to empty.
turn the key off and install the 100 ohm resistor, turn the key on and it should read close to 3/4.
ABYC wireing says the fuel meter wire from the sender to the meter is pink, dont trust it. dissconnect the sender wire at the sender and the meter.
with one end insulated test the wire resistance at the other end to a known good ground, anything other than infinity indicates the wire is either comprimised or someting was spliced into it.
either the meter has an internal failure or the send wire is seeing something close to 33 ohms or less.
with the meter white wire dissconected and the key on you should see a blinking bar indicating empty.

Re: Yamaha fuel level indicator

Thanks for the reply. The pink wire is good, the sender is good. With the white wire on the back of the gauge disconnected, the fuel level indicator does not blink, so I'm guessing it's the gauge that's bad. I'll try the resistor test.
