Yamaha in Cold Temperature

I went out on a friend's boat 2 weeks ago. Running a 90 HP 2 stroke Yamaha (don't know the year)...temps were in the 60's...the motor ran fabulous...like a new motor. This past weekend we went out again...it was cold and windy...temps in the mid- 30's...the motor ran TERRIBLE...really rough, coughing, sneezing, stalling. I couldn't believe the difference in how the motor ran just because it was cold. Is this normal? My friend says it happens all the time when it's cold...he usually quits boating when the temps get below 40 degrees.

If the thermostat is operating correctly, then should not make a difference. The heat of the engine under the cowl should warm the incoming air.

I've run my 1999 Yamaha 90C in temps from 25F to 98F and never could tell any difference at all. But always allow motor to idle/warm up for several minutes before leaving the dock. Sounds to me like your friend's motor must have some other running issues?

Or maybe someone removed the stats for some reason

Tell me it isn't so!!! People wouldn't remove thermostats would they? I see one of the gold miners on Bering Sea Gold using a 90 yamaha in frozen water and appears to work fine for them.

Something is not right with that motor...it should run fine in colder weather...look at all the duck hunters with outboard motors running in cold weather!...maybe it is the thermostat, can't much think of anything else it might be?

Yes apparently there are people that do not think stats do anything but cause problems so they take them out, and it is not only on outboard motors.

It would be nice if all realized the need of the back pressure/restriction of the stat to be in place to force proper water flow to all parts for proper cooling and the need of proper heat control to make fuel burn properly.

Riding Yamaha WaveRunner was an awesome experience for me, I recently brought it. And I highly recommend it others if you want to enjoy the thrills of high speed riding.
