There has been a few inquires lately about yamaha model codes that are in fact international models, not U.S. models. Some of these models where officially imported into the U.S but from 1986 all model codes became U.S. specific.

International model codes are - AETO, BETO, CETO, DETO and FETO.

Example - 70BETO

70 - HP
B (or A,C,D,F)- Engine production generation, not a year guide.
E - Electric start
T - Power trim
O - Oil injection (autolube)

If a letter is missing, that motor does not have that particular feature. For instance, if the 'O' was missing, that motor does not have oil injection.

The international model numbers do not include the year reference. The year reference is a solitary letter on the bottom right (or left) hand corner of the id plate, this letter corresponds to the year in the same way a U.S. model does.

The second letter could also be -

M - manual start
W - manual and electric start
H - tiller handle
C - tiller handle with remote

The third letter could also be -

D - hydro tilt
P - power tilt

If there is a 5th letter, it refers to shaft length -

S - standard
L - long
X - extra long
U - super ultra long

Re: Yamaha 'international' model codes

Thanks for this very helpful information. I in fact have the same model - a 70BETO. I am in the States and trying to find the replacement part(s) for the trim/tilt unit but I'm having trouble identifying what the part should be.

Is there a US model equivalent for the 70BETO, or can someone point me to a part number for the trim/tilt unit. I believe these were all made by Showa but I just want an easy way to swap on a used/rebuilt one.

Thanks!

Look closely at the bottom right corner on the id-plate. There should be a letter telling you what year model your motor is. Then you are a step closer to finding parts.
This is a 70BETO "R"(2002)

225BETO "D"(1990)

Good to see a fellow Aussie on here ( even if you are from Melb. . . . :)).
The different codes do cause some confusion, but I thought the way they are coded in sunny Australia was quite simple.
I have a 30 DMH R . . . . 30hp, 4th generation in series ( 1997 - 2002 ), manual start, tiller handle, 2002 model.

Mine is an "S"...

Looks like the trim motor is a 2-wire kind with a blue and green lead.
