Re: Yamaha IO steering

hello
most boats have a tendancy to wander at low speeds. especially at idle. its usually due to hull design. however the sterring tiller on the yammi's are known to come loose. have someone hold the helm and someone to wiggle the drive port and stbd and see if the tiller is wallowed out.
try idling a jet drive boat for a mile or so. makes you get creative with ways to make the boat track :)
good luck and keep posting

Re: Yamaha IO steering

My boat tracks true even at idle. But the new boat that I just bought does wander at idle. It has a Merc. I guess I got lucky with mine the first time. Otherwise I have been extremely happy with the performance of my boat. It will find a new home next week. Moved up to a bigger boat this year.

If the Yamaha's tiller arm is loose and not too worn, you can remove the T&T switch on the side of the outdrive and tighten the nut. But folks forget that the torque of the prop will keep any outdrive pulled to one side. Its not just flopping around making the boat wander. Hull design is the problem here.

Re: Yamaha IO steering

I have one of the cursed 1994 Yamaha I/O as well. I live in Boston and nobody wants to fix them. When I picked up my boat today for the season, my mechanic, who won't touch the outdrive, told me that the power steering bushing is gone. He doesn't know how to fix it. Is there any mechanic out there who still knows how to fix these things?

Please email me at mantlemaris2003@yahoo.com if you know any mechanic in New England who is qualified and willing to work on a Yamaha I/O

Hi Captain Ken

Are you able to help me on a suggestion for a Yamaha I/O mechanic in New England. It would take me forever and cost me a fortune get the boat down to Florida to you as much as I would like to do so.Therefore I am hoping you know a local mechanic here.
Thank you
Jeff
781-799-6713

I want to know what a power steering bushing is? Never heard of that before. Is it kinda like a muffer bearing?

Re: Yamaha IO steering

Capt. Ken

I asked my mechanic for more details. My mechanic only works on Mercs so it my be a merc part that he is thinking is on a yamaha. He never removed the outdrive. There was play in the steering and that was his guess as to what the problem is. Could be he has no idea what he is talking about. Finding a good mechanic in Mass. is very difficult. I change them every year. Last's years replaced my throttle cable and it took three mechanics to finally fix the problem which was he tied it to the exhaust so it overheated. Its unbelievable.

Capt. Ken

Checked with Mechanic. He did not remove Gimbal covering so he was guessing but he said there is a lot of "slop in the steering" and believes it to be a "bushing on the tiller arm". he said one would have to remove the cover to know for sure and he does not do that kind of work.

Re: Yamaha IO steering

Get with Capt Ken on this. I had to give my local mechanic his contact info and he helped get parts for my 91 I/O. The lwr unit was leaking and the upper bellows was cut. Had my boat back to my surprise in about 2 1/2 weeks. I am sure that Capt Ken. had a hand in that. By the way thanks for the help here in Bossier City, LA. It was greatly appreciated. It is really sad that Yamaha just dropped support like that. It's not a bad drive, at least with my boat.

Its too bad Yammie stopped this drive in the US. Its a great drive! Not too many boat mechanics do them these days... :( Yammie makes good outboards and the I/O were great also. Wish I knew why they did not do well in the US market?? I think Mercrusier might have pulled a few strings??
