Yamaha (Mariner) 15C starts with first pull then dies

I have gone through this but can get this thing running right.

ITs a 15C 1990ish, I have spark, hot blue spark. I pump the gas ball till it is firm, then pull the choke and turn the thottle to start. one pull it starts runs for 30 secs then dies.

It wont restart at this point. No matter what i do.

What are common causes of this?

Since this is a Mariner 15C outboard, and not a Yamaha, I am moving it over to the Merc/Mariner forum. While Merc may have bought powerheads from Yamaha, that is as far as it goes. There are differences in the fuel and electrical system that makes them Mariner, and not Yamaha.

Is this motor new to you or is this a change in the way it has run?

Are you turning the choke off once started? Excessive choke can foul plugs and kill the motor, making it very difficult to restart again.

When it does die, immediately remove the spark plugs, smell them, look at them. Are they dripping with fuel, coated in soot, either may be a sign of an excessively rich or flooded condition which could be caused by a few things. Or the plugs may be clean and dry.

Excessive use of the choke.

Too high float level in the carb.

Ruptured fuel pump diaphram.

compression is 105 in each cylinder, I dont think it would be too much choke as i only pull it out half way then turn it in once she gets going. I am leaning twoard a fuel problem ... no pun intended. When the engine dies the plugs have a little gas on them, but there is still spark.

Also today I noticed fuel leaking out of the bottom of the carb. I am going to get a carb kit and have a go at the carb
