Yamaha outboard tach questions

My motor is a 2001 Yamaha 200hpdi and the tach was installed at the time of initial rigging. Lately the tach has been displaying only part of the rpm numbers......the bottom portion of the digits shows fine but often the top doesn't.

I understand that newer tachs will display the engine hours (run time since new) while mine does not.

Questions: If I buy a used tach, will it display the correct hours for my motor when installed or will it carry over the hours from the previous motor? Also, what do you guys think about me not replacing it at all? After two years of ownership I can pretty much find the 'sweet spots' by the way the boat rides and the way the motor sounds.......I normally cruise at 3200-3300 as I was told that that range would give me the best gas mileage on the 22 foot Pathfinder.

Any and all input will be gratefully acknowledged......thanks in advance!

Re: Yamaha outboard tach questions

Hi Tony:

Be careful buying a used tach. Probably someone will try to unload one they had trouble with. As far as the hours on a used one it will show tthe hours of the old motor. As you run your engine it will only add hours to waht is already there. Best to start new cost $300.00 to $400.00 and then you will have zero hours. Just estimate your current hours on motor and add to new hour gauge. I hope this helps.
