yamaha outdrive gear grinding when shifting

I recently pulled outdirive and motor to replace upper sterring pivot shaft to prevent outdrive swinging about 30 degrees. when I assembled i/o back to boat I still have about a 5 degree swing and the lower unit gears grind when I shift to forward or reverse. I preformed the gear engagement adjustment per manual and the gears still grind. What am I missing....I seafox1950@yahoo.com
