Can a tach read lazy after it gets old?

Got the motor running good but the tach is off. Its a 1984 150 etln. I noticed after a carb rebuild when trying to set the idle the tach stays around 1000rpms. I can adjust the idle up quite a bit before the tach climbs any. Also i was out Sat. fishing and gps speed was 58 but the tach only reads 4000.

How can you troubleshoot this without buying a tach? Maybe clean connections?

Thanks in advance.

Re: yamaha tach problems

Most aftermarket Tachs are off and majority of them wll do what your saying while engine is running tap the lense firmly (not Breaking it) lol and you will see it jump more than likely and have seen junky ign. switches do the same thing
