Thinking of buying a boat and was wondering which motor would be the best, As far as maintenance expence and less problems, these would be either a 150 Yamaha or a 200 Johnson. Both are two stroke motors . have never had one and was wondering which would be the best. Thanks

Re: Yamaha vs Johnson

Thanks Trent... I was thinking the same but this will be the first for me and neither are Salt Water series , so I guess that means they are both carburation. Just didn't want to buy the wrong one and wish I had the other, The Boats I am looking at are 22 and 23 foot cuddy cabin boats and just wanted to make sure the 150 was big enough. Read on another post on this board that said the Yamaha's had a problem with corrosion.

Re: Yamaha vs Johnson

The Johnson is the same as the old OceanPro/Oceanmaster series, as it has all the stainless steering shaft, tilt tube, internal coatings in the exhaust, stainless hardware, etc.

Yamaha is a lot better than they were a few years ago in the corrosion department, but still are not as good as Merc or Johnson/Evinrude motors.

For a 22 or 23 cuddy cabin boat, you will need at least a 200 or better yet, a 225. A 150 would be marginal and you would probably be disappointed the first time you load it up, add full fuel, and head offshore.

Thanks for the reply seahorse5, that is another thing I was thinking about, if the 150 is underpowered it would take more fuel just to run and if I could get the 200 to plane off quicker and then back it down it would probably do better on gas although I know they both will use a pretty good bit.

I think Both Boats would weigh somewhere around 4000 loaded with passengers and fuel so definatly want something to push that much weight.

I WOULD GO WITH THE JOHNSON THEY HOLD UP BETTER THAN ANYTHING ON THE MARKET TO SALT WATER AND ARE GREAT RUNNING ENGINES WITH A VERY LARGE DEALER NETWORK SO PARTS AND SERVICE ARE EASILY LOCATED AS FAR AS HORSEPOWER I WOULD GO WITH THE MOST HORSEPOWER THAT I COULD IT MAY COST A LITTLE MORE NOW BUT WILL BE WELL WORTH IT IN PERFORMANCE

Re: Yamaha vs Johnson

Thanks I think I am begining to make up my mind. Hard decesion with a first boat. Have been in many boats just never paid a whole lot of attention to engine detail, (wasn't my problem at the time) just want to make the right choice and not be sorry on the one I made. Thanks again on the replies

JohnH...I have to agree with the Johnson as the best choice. Also...don't ever have regrets on your choice of boats, especially your first one...every boat has it's limitations, and none will do everything you want it to do. I've bought and built about 30 boats and for now I have 3, I use them all. Rivers and big lakes and small lakes and fishing and hauling and skiing and hunting and whatever else you can think of. I'm just happy to be on the water, or if nothing else, looking in my rear-view mirror and seeing a boat tailgating behind the truck...have fun and enjoy the water.
just a Thought

john H,

I'm a yammy fan, but i would be BS you if i auto matically told you yammy.

A good engine is a running engine. Make sure it all checks out and compresion ok. Check for other stuff.

you get a good engine, it'll run for a while. but with anything else in life. THINGS HAPPENS ! Regardless of brand or year.

but that is just my opinion, and i own a yammy, and its rusted alitle, cause the owner didnt run it for a year.

good luck!
