Hi all,
I am in the process of buying a new 50 hp, high thrust (Big Foot) 4 stroke engine for my pontoon boat. The boat is a Bennington 18 foot (don't know the model number) with
"23" pontoons. I am in the process of deciding which one to buy. I would appreciate anyone who has an opinion of which would be a the best engine to purchase (Yamaha or Mercury) to respond.

I am presently running a 2000 40 hp 4 stroke Yamaha but want to purchase new this year as I want a brand new motor for when I retire in less than a year.

Re: Yamaha vs Mercury

These are both fine motors. The first consideration is a close welll established knowledgable dealer.
If I was buying I would give the Etec a close look.
The gear ratio on the big foot Merc is 2:33.1 The 40,50 and 60 Evinrude Etec is a pontoon friendly 2:67.1. 240 lbs No breakin period,no service for 3 years or 300 hour, fewer less complicated service intervals Can't speak of the Yamaha or Merc but Etec is made in the USA.
You should give it a test run see if it suits your application.

Will the controls you have now work with the new yamaha motor? If so thats the way I would go.
