Can I run Penzoil 2-stroke oil in my Yamaha 1999 225-HP SWSII? It's only a fraction of the price. Will it damage the engine?

This is a very controversial topic with no right answer. You will receive all kinds of responses from the diehard Yamalube user to the WalMart oil user. I personally use Walmart oil in my Yamaha and it has always performed very well. The key is to use TCW-3 rated oil. Bye the way, the Walmart oil is manufactured by Quaker State which is owned by Pennzoil. Just my .02

I have a Suzuki 2 Stroke and use Yamalube. I was using Suzuki oil but it is harder for me to get. The Yamalube actually smokes less in my motor. I get my Yamalube from a Yamaha Dealer at the bulk prive of $11.00 a gallon. This is even cheaper than the Quicksilver that I was planning on using.

Use what you want bassed on price, just be sure it is TCW-3 rated or better than TCW-3 like the JohnnyRude Lube etc.

Knightgang

Personally I would only use any oil from the outboard manufacturer as long as the outboard is under warranty. After that I would (and have used) any TCW-3 rated oil. Preferably biodegradable oil, to be kind to the environment, since that have been out for some years now and have proven to be good - I used it for 3 years in my old 2-stroke (until I bought a 4-stroke instead).

/Bo

Is this engine carbed or EFI. If EFI you need to worry about taking the O2 sensor out. The number 1 problem I see with using off brand oil is O2 sensor problems. If EFI. Its recommened you use Yamahalube and Yamaha Ring free. Im a big fan of both Yamaha products.

Re: yamalube oil needed?

I've been through this many times and have learned through testing of a few different oils, the "Best" oil for "MY" use.
I will say Yamalube is fine, Johnson/Evinrude XD-25 is great, Bombardier Ficht Ram is great, as is Amsoil AIO. Quicksilver has given me years of trouble-free use in my Merc-Never tried Penz. synthetic, but I hear good things.
The semi-synthetics and full synthetics will give much better results than the straight mineral oils, but I'm not stating brands..... :D

Agree the DFI oils are the best. They all smell pretty bad.

Another thing is try to avoid combining synthetic and mineral based oils. The megalo-mart oils may be supplied by Quaker right now- but those places usually go with the lowest bidder, i.e.- the manufacturer can vary over time. Also, a lot of these oils (had terrible problems with Advanced Auto Parts oil in a car- made by Havoline)are their left overs or inferior products that they won't put their own name on.
