My 2007 25 HP 2-stroke has just passed the break-in period. It ran rough at first and smoked a lot, but now that I'm running 100:1 with new plugs and have about 16 hours on her, she runs great.

My only complaint is that it takes 10-12 pulls in the morning when the engine is cold to get her to start. This is with the choke on. Without the choke it won't start. After warmup, she starts first pull every time with no choke needed.

I pump the bulb till its hard, so it feels like there is gas in the carb. Actually, it only takes 1 or 2 pumps at most.

Any suggestions?

Yes ...... run it on 50:1 ... not 100:1 ...... this is how you start a yamaha ..... first pump the bulb 3 squeezes only .... even if it is not hard, then pull the choke .... then take off the kill switch and give it 3 pulls, put the kills switch back and give it hard pull, if it doesn't start or give the indication like it sounds it is gonna start then you need to rebuild the carbs properly ..... anyway, push the choke back and then pull it until it starts ........

The Owner's manual clearly states 100:1 oil mix. I used 50:1 for the breakin and it smoked terribly. Why would the carbs need rebuilding...it's a brand new motor?

What I meant was, if you follow my procedure and it doesn't start you need to rebuild the carbs ... a new motor's carbs can have dust etc. in it that can block them ..... I would still use 50:1 .... don't say I didn't warn you .... but what do I know about yamaha ...... :)

Re: Yami 25 Hard Starting

I'm new here so I don't know who knows what. I've owned dozens of Evinrudes and Johnsons and they have all started on the 2nd or 3rd pull. It would seem to me that possibly the gas is draining back into the tank. But if that were the case, why wouldn't the primer bulb bring it back up?

I understand your warning about the oil ratio. What I don't understand is why the manufacturer would specify a harmfull scenario. What are you suggesting? - internal engine wear?

On another subject, with this engine would it be appropriate to run it with the gas line disconnected to drain the gas as part of the winterizing procedure? I have done that with every other outboard I have ever owned.

The gas is not draining back to the tank, that is why the primer bulb have an arrow on it, the fuel only goes one way ..... ideally it should start in 3 pulls and 1 pull when warm ..... the only explanation would be a good carb clean, when motors come new from the factory everything have sealant and varnish on it so it doesn't rust etc. that can cause the carb to get dirty .... Some (not sure if yam do this) put like a gel pack in their carb bowls to protect the needle when shipping that dissolves when fuel is run through them, .... (that is why you must tow your boat with fuel in the carbs and only drain the motor at home before storing the boat) ...... I also run the carbs dry will all by outboards .... works well ....
