Yeah, those are what they Called a "Badged" Machine. Made in Japan. Aldens was a Mail order brand kinda Like Sears and Montgomery wards. That's a good "Metal" Machine and should work quite well. I would get an Artist brush and some Mineral spirits and wash her down really well and then buy some Sewing machine oil and oil her back up and I bet she'll run like a top as long as the timing is good. Timing is easy to set on them. Let me know if you find the model# and I'll see if we can find some more info for you. Threading, Tensioning and bobbin winding should be fairly basic

Hi,

Don't mean to do a thread Hijack - but I'm curious - what should one look for in a sewing machine for re-doing upholstery and sewing a boat cover?

Re: Yard sale Sewing Machine.

Well, info on that machine is not very plentiful. It appears to be a 1930's model and a clone of the Singer Model 15. Threading, Tensioning etc will be almost exactly the same. pckeen, Any of the older 50's 60's machines that are of All Metal construction should work fine. Boat covers are more of a challenge due to the bulk. The limited "Throat" of these machines makes it difficult to sew Large bulky items so you'll have a challenge there. The machine will sew it, but getting it to pass under the presser foot is another matter.

Loosen and look behind the motor. They sometimes hid the model tags there since many machines were sold as pump and electric depending on the country.

BTW, some of the best drapery makers in the country are men, straight men.

Re: Yard sale Sewing Machine.

This should be a close proximity to how to thread the machine.

Threading.jpg

As I stated before, you should open her up and wash down any and all moving parts with Mineral Spirits and then blow her out. Then use Sewing Macnine Oil ONLY to oil her back up. If you do this she should run like new. You can buy belts etc online, either on ebay or from here...Sewing Machine Parts
This PDF file has some more info that might help as well.

Thanks for the info wood!
Just what i was looking for......

Now the lever on the side at the wheel end...is that for needle speed? Slower or faster for vinyl?

1930's .......That could have been used to sew up a Japanese soldier’s uniform……. Or a U.S.A soldier for that matter. What a small world we live in.

Take a better pic of that lever for me. I can't see what you're referring to.

Re: Yard sale Sewing Machine.

Oh, OK, Nope that is the reverse lever. You pull it down to make the machine stitch backwards. You always want to start and end your seams with a couple of back stitches. Two stitches forward and two stitches back then go on with the stitch. That way it won't ever unravel on you. The numbers are the index for the number of stitches per inch. You want it on the lowest number possible to give you the biggest stitch possible.
This might help show you what I mean. If you need help PM me and I can make a video of how to do all of this for you on my machine. It's really simple once you SEE it done. Trust me...If this Dumb Okie can figure it out ANYBODY can!!!!:D

Re: Yard sale Sewing Machine.

Well if an old Okie can do it....Than an old Buckeye can do it too!

So you load the bobbin from a threaded spool that you buy...then load the bobbin at the neddle end...thread it to neadle and start sewing.

Ill get with ya in couple months when things start to slow down and i can get that video from ya.

Thanks again WOG for all the help you have given to me and to the fourm.
