Re: Year and HP of old Evinrude?

Welcome to Iboats, Smoe
Evinrude #4425 is a single cylinder 1.5hp Sportsman outboard made between 1948-51. The C on the end of the serial number indicates it was made in 1950 or '51.
Parts are hard to find for these old outboards compared to parts for mid-late '50s Johnny/Rudes. But they're out there. If you need a durable part, try tcoutboard.com or laingsoutboards.com.

Hope that helps!

Re: Year and HP of old Evinrude?

Thank you Paul that helps a lot!!! Need a set of rings... I broke one putting the head on yesterday not realizing there was a certain spot the ring had to be located. My mistake and wish I had found you guys before I started. Live and learn I guess? The rest of the engine looks in good shape after sitting in a barn for at least the last 40+ years... My dad had it and guess he moved on to bigger engines cause I'm 51 and never saw it run till the other day. Started the first couple of pulls (only a few seconds) but had a gas tank leak which I now have repaired.
One more question... The lable where gas is added states use 40 weight marine oil in the mixture. Is this compatable with 2 cycle oil or should I fing the correct oil and where will I find this? Same place you gave me already?
Thanks and off to check the sights you sent.

SMoe

Ok, I might be able to help with that. If you can get the exact dimentions of the rings (I belive the bore is 1.625" but you'll need the width and such) you can get them from Otto works:
http://www.dol.net/~dave.reed/otto.html
I don't think those would have been used on any later engine (or at least I can't find one), so they don't cross-reference to any other engine. A brake cylinder hone works well for honing small bores like that. ;)

You could also try posting a want-ad over at aomci.org

Go with TC-W3 rated 2-stroke outboard oil for the engine. It will work a lot better with that than 40 weight. You may use a 24:1 mix with it.

Again thanks. Will check with Otto after checking the bore and ring with . Just got done pulling the carb. apart and is in very good shape for the year... think the float was set a little high but thats a easy fix. Will use the oil TC-W3 ,is it hard to find ?

any autostore or marina sells it. NAPA I believe is a big autostore chain across America, they would have it. From what I have seen on here even your Wally World sells it.

Just be sure that it say's on the bottle "TC-W3 NMMA certified". Synthetic or mineral based doesn't matter, that's personel choice.

Re: Year and HP of old Evinrude?

Thank you Paul Moir!!! You have been a great help!! The rings are on the way from Dave Reed!!
Sorry for the slow reply but WORK gets in the way sometimes!!
Another question; any place to find a water pump impeller for the same( Evinrude #4425 is a single cylinder 1.5hp Sportsman outboard made between 1948-51)? The one on it looks OK but may not be as flexable as it should be and don't want to cook the motor by being in a hurry!!

Thanks in advance for any help in advance!!

SMoe

I'm afraid I have no idea where to get that impeller. If you don't get any response here, try over at aomci.com.
I wonder if something can be subsituted. I don't have a lot of impellers here, but it might be worth a shot. Can you supply dimentions?

It's good to hear Otto works came through for you!

Thanks I will try aomci.com and see if I can get some dimentions in the morning. What type dimenisions should I look for it has 3 blades? Width of the impeller and distance from the center of the impeller to edge of the housing? Can get a photo if needed? Otto works was very helpfull and Dave is a really nice fellow!! Thanks SMoe

Try to get the shaft dimention, the OD of the pump housing dimention (or a blade-centre, as close as you can), and the width of the thickest part of the blades. Most the later impellers use 6 blades, but you could always cut three off (or perhaps even leave them there).

Re: Year and HP of old Evinrude?

Got some measurements. There are two impellers didn't have it all the way apart last night. They are both the same but one blade is missing from one so glad I checked. Housing ID 3 1/8, shaft dia. 7/16. Blades do not touch the the outer edge of the housing about 1/16 clearance so that should make it 3" dia. I think? Base of the blades closest to the bore is 1/4 but has a tapered part that rides in grove 1/8 so is 3/8 at the bore. The blades are flat on one side and tapered on the other 1/4 at the bore and 3/16 at the tip. Inside of the housing is concave for the taper. Hope you can understand all this giberish?

Forgot to say the bore has three groves that fit splines on the shaft.
