hi everyone,

i recently purchased a used center console. the engine on it is a 1986 johnson that runs decently. i was told it is a 140 hp. i am unable to read the model # and serial number as the plate is completely oxidized. is ther another way of determining the year and model number? i looked at the johnson website and others and all referenced the id tag that i can't read. any suggestions?

thanks,

charlie

Hi Charlie and welcome!

Look on the engine block for a large silver welch plug. The model and serial number will be on there.

It's a little larger than a quarter and will likely be on top of the block back near the heads. Looks like a big soft plug or core plug. Can't miss it.

hi obj,

man i feel like a kid here. the only thing i could find on the engine that looked as you described gave the letters and numbers F 1900 MS. there were other parts and numbers including an OMC 582508 08FZ-OA. mean anything to you?

i am stumped.

charlie

No Charlie...don't help. The 582508 is a common ignition coil. Don't know what the other letters mean. Could you post a pic or two of the engine? Sometimes we can at least get close to the year by seeing the engine. Did you get any paper work with the engine....a title or anything?

obj,

i will try to put some pics up later today. the boat was inherited by a woman from her uncle who was the original owner. she wanted to get a sail boat and i got this for a great price. having said that, there was no paperwork on the engine at all. her husband told me that it was a 1986 johnson. it has a 235 cover on it.

i truly appreciate your help and guidance.

charlie
