Year Identification?

When I took Marine Tech in high school the instructor told us that OMC uses the word "INTRODUCES" to decode the model year. When did this start and is it true?<br /><br />I N T R O D U C E S <br />0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9<br /><br />For example in the model number there would be an ES for an '89 and a CS for a '79.

You are right about "introduces" but it starts with 1, goes to 9 and then 0 so that ES is a '90 and CS is from '80. It started in 1980.

I remembered something vague about it, that was 6 or 7 years ago when he told me. Thanks for setting me straight on that.
