year model on mercs??

How do I determine the year mdl. of mercs by their serial #??I'm looking at purchasing a boat with a older merc I think a 91 175hp.The owner isn't sure of what year. Thank Delta breeze

I do not have the serial # with me I do know it's a"Black Max" any input on this engine?Thanks Mike
