I have a 6 HP Johnson seahorse that I need to find out the year so that I can get a repair manual. The only #'s I can find on the motor is
J3193997 on a plate that looks like a freeze plug and 312714 on top of top of a plate above the spark plugs. It has a logo plate with the letter M in a square box. Any help or susgestions as to how to obtain date will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Year motor manf.

The model number should be on the nameplate, which is (mabey was) on the transom clamp. It sounds to me like your welsh plug has just your serial number.

That 312*** number sounds like an OMC part number. If the engine's from the 60's or 70's, you may be able to id it from the catalogs here.
I think '64 was the first year for a 6hp.

Good luck!

Those numbers aren't helping. Look on the port side transom clamp for a small metal tag with a model nr. on it.

c/6
Hooty
