Can anyone please tell me the year of this engine? the Model No is BE4BRHLESR, I have seen on site about dating Evinrudes but I can't seem to get it to work for this one. Many thanks again. J.B.D.

Re: year of Evinrude 4 hp

The last character specifies the production run, the 2 characters before it define the year.

From that model # it looks like you've got a 1990 4HP Deluxe.

And that brings me back to a comment you made in your previous thread. You mentioned that the cooling water exits with the exhaust, are you also seeing a steady stream of water coming out of the pee hole at the bottom center of the powerhead a couple of inches in back of the shaft?

At the least, you'll want to replace the impeller if not the water pump and possibly replace the anode. It's a pretty easy job for you to tackle yourself.

Many thanks Ratracer, I can't say I noted any water from powerhead, I was more interested in it at the exhaust but somthing tells me I didn't see any there, will run it again and see, can you advise me if a Clymer manual Evinrude/Johnston(bought by mistake)2-300hp 1991-1994 would cover this engine to service it and change impeller etc? the seller mentioned somthing about a thermostat opening before cooling water apears at head? also how does one know the engine might be a deluxe? (by number?)this is nice motor starts runs no problem sounds lovely, looks as though it were only couple years old!thanks Ratracer. J.B.D.

Ratracer regarding the cooling water outlet at rear of powerhead on my 4hp Evinrude, I have looked at same and can find no outlet, there is casting bolted on there with pipes connected, the spark pluds are visable also, area is quite open, but no water outlet, I used piece welding wire into casting but nowt! also gave good inspection with torch and hand-lamp, nothing? am I looking correct area? thanks for now, J.B.D.

Re: year of Evinrude 4 hp

I haven't seen the Clymer manual so I can't offer an opinion if it will be useful enough or not for you. I do have the OEM repair manual for my '91 Johnson - identical to the Evinrude except for the color - and it was clear enough that along with with a little common sense I was able to follow it well enough to be able to replace the water pump last year in about an hour.

There are a number of differences between the regular 4HP and 4HP Deluxe models, a couple of the more obvious ones are that the Deluxe has full F-N-R shifting whereas AFAK all the regular 4HP models had only F-N with 180 degree pivot for reverse. Also, the regular 4HP model engine cover screwed on from the sides, whereas the Deluxe model cover mounted from the top much like larger outboards.

You can try going to http://www.evinrude.com and select US English, then Engine Diagrams on the lower left, then products: Evinrude Search: Normal, then select 1990 then 4 HP and look at the differences in the engine covers of the E4RDHLESR and the E4LESR models to confirm which model you have.

Very good Ratracer thanks again for information, I note that it only has F+N no reverse, and yes the engine must be turned through 180 degrees for reverse so probably is not deluxe! I did not find any coolant water outlet where you mentioned under rear of powerhead? there is a casting with pipes, the spark plugs are there, quite open infact,I put engine on floor, got torch, and spent good while with piece of welding wire going round anything that might be a water outlet, nothing! Am I looking in right area? Thanks again will check out site you mention. J.B.D.

Ah-ha! I didn't catch this reply...if you don't have a reverse, then you don't have a Deluxs.!
