I am looking at buying A 35 H.P. Johnson a co-worker has and was wondering the year. It's model # is RDS-21 and the serial # is 1880626. Also the cover says to mix one quart of 30W oil to 6 gallons of gas. Using 2 cycle marine motor wouldn't hurt it would it?

Re: Year of Johnson

Model RDS-21
Make Johnson
Year 1959
HP 35
WOT RPMS 4500
Displacement 40.5 cu.in. = 663.7 ccm
Cylinders 2
Weight 128 - 138 lbs. = 58.1 - 62.6 Kg
Gear Ratio 12:21

Please, do use TCW-III outboard oil instead of 30W! It will work much better. With TCW-III it is widely reported to be safe to go to 32:1 instead of 24:1 on that engine. OMC apparently changed their recomendation to 50:1 in a bullitin in the mid-60s. 24:1 won't hurt though, it's just a little smokier..
If he has been using 30W, he should decarb the engine. See the FAQ section.

Picture
