Year of Mariner without serial number

Hi Folks
I've recently acquired a second hand Mariner 40hp 2 stroke twin but the plate on the transom bracket is missing. All I can find is a round ally disc just under the engine lifting bracket which has 006512 stamped on it. I've been told that isn't a serial number, but does anyone have any ideas on what it is and how I can find the year of my engine?

If it has a lifting ring on the rear of block next to head it is a "import" Mariner made by Yamaha. The number posted will be the last digits of serial number. This motor was made rom mid 70's's till mid 90's and there is usually a serial plate under cowling...

That's excellent, many thanks for that. Yes, apparently it is probably a Yamaha built engine from somewhere during the eighties. It's a two stroke, twin choke, pull start engine. I've got a parts catalogue on disc which I'm using to try to identify which engine it is but there's so many. I was coming to the conclusion it was a 40M 676A but the A exhaust was above the prop whereas mine exhausts from the prop which suggests a B. Also looking through the drawings mine has a single block coil pack whereas the drawings for these models shows it as two separate units.
Maybe I would be better off following down the Yamaha route, I just never realised Yamaha used to build for Mariner for Europe (I'm in the UK)
