There pretty much bullet proof to live this long and were in production till the mid 90s

One last question......I was told that this motor will hook up to my controls for my 2007 9.9 mercury. Just wondering if this is correct or will I need an adapter to make it work.

You will need a electrical and shift adapter or just find a side plug ADI box might be easier and cheaper
