Might have the opportunity to pick this up for 75 bucks. According to seller, it won't run, but the carbs have been cleaned, and it has spark. Seller thinks it has something to do with the pull start.

He sent a picture, but isn't able to get the model number for a bit. Here we go! (again. Seems I always have to ask the same dang question here)
What year is this?
Thanks.

Woops, sorry, the seller said it was a 25. He was clueless of the year. Thanks.

That motor is too old to be a 25hp (or not old enough depending how you look at it). My guess is that its 1959 18hp. Could be early 1960's, but no newer.

$75 is pricey for that motor where I am in Canada. I'd only pay that if I really wanted/needed it.

Re: year of this 25 Johnson.

I was a little more interested until he emailed me the picture. I still thought I may as well learn the year of it. It looked to me to be an 18, but he was certain that it was a 25, so I figured I was wrong, and the picture wasn't the greatest, so I never coulda been certain.
Thanks yall.

Wow, that is nice! That is what I would like to restore one into, but with the cosmetic appearance of the one I posted, it makes me a little sceptical on buying it, not knowing what he did to the rest of it. I decided to post it anyway, and yall just strengthened the idea not to get it.

Thanks again!

I would consider it for "project" only. Looks like it has had a tough life.

Well I for one would NOT let the appearance scare me off. I see tons of old motors around here especially in the fall that get the spray bomb camo job done to them on duck hunting boats.

If it has compression that is decent (testing with a guage would be even better) and the gear oil isn't a milkshake, I'd give it a go. If nothing else it's got some ebay-able parts and scrap aluminum is high right now!

Re: year of this 25 Johnson.

I am not scared at all of appearance. Hence why I posted it here. I love old outboards, and have a couple ugly ones. I would like to find an old one like that, and restore it into what river runner posted. But, I wanted to find the year, to make sure it is what I wanted. Also, what ya'll don't know, is that the seller didn't seem to have a brain, or respond emails well. I was afraid of what he might have done to it internally, that can't be fixed. And, being 2 hours away, it would be a pain to check out for ourselves, if there wasn't a good chance we buy it.

Sure scrap is high (we scrap a lot of stuff, so we know exactly how it goes) but there isn't enough for us to justify going to get it, parting it out, screwing with ebay ads, and then scrapping it.

Yup, I wouldn't drive two hours for it unless I was "headed that way" anyway!

I have an Evinrude 18 I need to resurect one day myself.

I have a relative who lives about 20 mins from there, but doesn't know a flip about outboards. If the picture looked okay, I could make a judgement call, for her to pick it up, sight unseen, and we get it the next time we see her. I didn't want to take a chance, on an obviously abused motor.
