Unless you have a water source feeding the engine, DO NOT start the boat out of the water. The engine relies on a raw water feed for cooling, and starting the engine dry will destroy the impeller (raw water feed pump) in a matter of seconds.

No stupidity, just in the learning curve....

... hi Hulk.

generally a little more info helps. Like what thing exactly? A type, year and model. What you know about it mechanically or maintenance wise. A pic would be great too. Its risky to just have you hook up muffs and a fresh battery without more info.

Welcome to iboats!
A lot of good knowledge on this board. But everyone will definitely ask for more info, boat and engine size, I/O or outboard?;)

i'm still trying to figure out the exact model but its a mid 70's lund with a 115 merc outboard. The engine is all black.

The merc outboard would need a propeller to push the boat -perhaps it was removed or stolen. Lunds had both aluminum and fiberglass hulls in the mid 70s. You need a "muff" to run the engine out of the water using a garden hose for cooling. These cost less than $20 and are available at any marine supply house (west marine, any marina, walmart)

Walmart has them for $4 bucks

thanks. someone just told me that I can run the engine in a large garbage can full of water. True or false.

true, but it would be much easier to just hook it up to a hose with muffs. they are real cheap, and a lot easier than having to clean out an old garbage can any time that you want to work on your motor, or trying to dump 20 gallons at once.

True, but the water is gonna heat up fairly fast and not good for flushing.

If you go the garbage can route make sure you fill it up high enough. Just filling it up to the level of the water intake isn't enough. It has to be filled up above the level of where the water pump is in the lower unit. I found this out the hard way last year and my boat had a needless trip to the shop after I couldn't figure out why it "wasn't cooling properly".
