I'm off to a good start, day one and here's my second question. I swear I'm searching before I post. Anyway, I need a fuel pump in my 1967 Johnson 6hp,I squeeze the bulb and fuel shoots out of the pump gaskets. The closest looking replacement part I've found is part number 18-7823, which indicates it replaces part #393088. Scroll down on this page http://www.theshadconnection.com/cgi-bin/page.cgi?page=319 to see what I've found. This replacement kit is pretty close, it looks like the two end pieces are the same, but the diaphragms are definitely different from the pump that is currently on the motor. Any reason this kit won't work? If not, does anyone know where to find the proper replacement kit? I appreciate any help, thanks.

Re: Yet another 6hp fuel pump question

I know that OMC never offered a repair kit for that particulair fuel pump. Instead, you replaced the whole pump. It should still be available from Johnson/Evinrude dealers.
I don't know if the Sierra kit fits it though.

Check this out. Your pump is listed there as 388685.

Hope this helps!

Re: Yet another 6hp fuel pump question

Thanks for the help, with that guidance, I've found several places with the replacement pumps for older engines. If anyone is interested, the Sierra replacement part # is 18-7350, they range anywhere from $32 online to $42 at West Marine. I've been told the replacement fuel pump kit (18-7823) can be made to work with the older engines, but it apparently may be tricky. For just a little more $$, I figure I'll just replace the whole thing. Again, thanks for the replies.

Re: Yet another 6hp fuel pump question

update on this. I don't know if it's allowed to praise commercial places, but I got the fuel pump in 2 days from boatingsolutions.com, they were great to deal with. It fit perfectly, hooked it up, pumped some gas in it, the motor wouldn't start. Kept pumping gas, the ball felt hard, no gas was coming out of the carb throat. (I am sure the more experienced of you at this point are saying, hey, I think you're carb is clogged). I guess if you keep forcing gas into a fuel pump and there's nowhere for it to go, it will quickly rupture the seals on the fuel pump and gas will go shooting out the back. I think that's what had happened to the person who I bought this motor from. Luckily, I had picked an older fuel pump, it was missing the top intake plastic piece. I used the top part of the new one with the main body of the old one and it's working just fine now. So Paul, I think if there wasn't such a high degree of operator error involved, the new pump would work nicely. It was a perfect fit.
