Yet another - how to paint my trailer post :)

Hi,

I'm rebuilding my old boat trailer which is made of steel tubes. I'm done with most prep work - all the old paint and rust are completely gone and it's bare metal now waiting for me to decide what to do next :)

Is it a good paint system to use the rustoleum professional primer spray with the high performance enamel spray? I'm of course looking for a durable result with corrosion protection.

If this is not a good setup, can you please advise how would you go about painting the trailer?
(doesn't have to be rustoleum i guess)

Regards, Yarin.

Wire brush to remove scale. Prime it with Rustoleum rust reformer. Then topcoat with Rustoleum Fish Oil primer. Finish coat with the Rustoleum enamel color of your choice.

I did that with a totally rusty trailer back in 1986. I sold it in 2009 and it still looked like new.

Thank you for the information! First time i hear of a fish oil to be honest. I couldn't find anything on their US based website, only the Australian one - Do you know where I can find this online here in the US?

Its been a long time, so I had to google it. Apparently, it has been superseded.

Personally, the rust reformer in COMBINATION with the fish oil was my claim to success. But that's just my opinion. At the time, (36 years ago) I was a paint chemist and had access to a lot of data.

Rustoleum rusty metal primer works pretty good. I love rustoleum with hardener sprayed from gun for trailer topcoating.

How about their marine metal primer and topside paint? I mean after all this trailer gets submerged in water. Would that be a good paint system?

Regular rustoleum is just as good and easier to source. Every big box carries it.
