Yet another OMC tilt issue

Hi Guys...Ran a search on my problem before coming to the board with it. 1977 OMC 5.7 litre with Electric shift drive. Tilt was working perfectly (as perfect as they get). Before heading to the lake, I double checked it and all I got was the dreaded click of the solenoids. Checked all the connections first. You could hear the click in the drive as well, so I assume I'm getting power all the way down. Removed the worm gear and shaft, no spin on the motor. Took the motor out, cleaned it up, reinstalled and it worked like a charm. Out on the water having a grand time. Comes time to raise the drive and we're back to square one, just a click. Won't raise when you try to help it by hand. Is something binding up causing the shaft not to turn? Any help appreciated.

What did the brushes and the commutator look like in your motor? Was the surface smooth and the grooves sharp and clean? Another thing that could cause the problem is a dirty ground. Lets enought juice thru to click the solenoid but not enough to operate the motor.

I believe your motor is the two wire non-flanged style. I see new aftermarket motors on ebay for about $94.00.

Re: Yet another OMC tilt issue

I have this problem with mine from time to time. I have a 1983 OMC with the 5.7L. Anyway, it seems there is tremendous stress on the tilt gear and on mine it seems to jam a little bit from time to time. I'll hit the tilt toggle and "click" "click" just like yours. But if someone is in back and gives it a tap, or pushes up on it to take a little of the weight off the gear, it then kicks in. I used some marine grease on the gear and filled the tilt fluid case with marine grease (the tilt fluid usually just leaks back out and water typically gets in the case due to the crappy design).

Since then, I have not had any problems. Next time it acts up, have someone in back give it a little tap or push down or up depending on what direction you are trying to go with it. I noticed on mine it was typically having the problem when going up rather than going down.

Re: Yet another OMC tilt issue

I too have OMC Tilt Drive issues. I just registered with this site and the information looks good so far that I've read. I’m a bit ahead of some of the others in as far as I’ve had all aspects of my lower unit apart several times. When running with a new fresh motor, the tilt up mechanism works marginally OK. If the motor is a little old , forget it. Too much weight cantilevered out past the pivot with a **** poor design to lift it out of the water. My latest solution is to put 24 volts to it and WOW. Does it ever work well now. BUT, I’ve had the clutch pack apart so many times that the keeper clips keep jumping out of the groove intended to keep the pressure on the large compression washer. Other than getting it re-machined to a sharper edge,,,, has anyone out there come up with a better idea or kit to replace this crappy clutch design?? Or something to replace the entire lift mechanism altogether. Whom ever designed this and said when finished,,, “what a good job I’ve done” ought to be shot. The trim motor and Ball Screw mechanism works well all the time due to the huge mechanical advantage the mechanism has to lift the front of the engine up. Why the hel_ couldn’t the same guy have designed the tilt mechanism?? This is my first boat and what an experience it has been. I don’t mind working on this stuff,,, but I’d like it to stay fixed after a work on it. Any ideas guys/gals???

How old are the soleniods? They could be going south. They will click, but the connections inside might be bad and not letting power through. Are you getting full voltage out when you hit the switch? What shape was the motor in when you pulled it? As Boomyal said, burnt/dirty comutator or sticking brushes could be a posibility too.

The retaining ring pops out of the clutch housing generally because it has become deformed. Try flipping it. Otherwise replace it and make sure it's properly seated.

bamaboater- how're ya makin' out?

I was just thinking, you said you took the motor out and cleaned it up. There is a little tiny ballbearing that sits on top of the armature shaft that goes up against the end cap that holds the brushes. (wish I had a scanner, I'd post the diagram) When I rebuilt mine, I didn't know it was there and lost it on dissasembly. Put it back together and it worked I think twice then nothing again. I finally figured out the problem and got a new one from my local marine shop. Been working fine ever since. Let us know what you find!

Welcome to the board.
One thing you should do is start your own Thread instead of taking over BAMABOATER thread.
It get very confusing when have two people posting what they have done on their problem in the same thread.
It is also one of the rules.
You have got some good information so far.
Also make sure the problem is not that the outdrive pivot pins are dry or the grease is so old that it is really glue.
