Sorry all had to do it....
I've got a new to me 2004 5.0 GXI-D with a Michegan Motorz block installed in 2016... on my previous boat which was a 96 4.3GS i always used the SAE30 (Royal Purple) with good results. I'm confused on what to use with the new motor. I'm reading I should use the SAE30 per the manual and others saying that 10w-40 is the new recommendation and just recently read that the 10W40 is specific to 2008 and newer motors. Motors predating 2008 are to use 15w40??? Totally confused. Any recommendations from the group on what I should use?
Thanks

Volvo did recommend full syn 10/40 in recent years, but why not ask Michigan Motorz since they are the ones who provided the engine?
You can use straight 30, 40, 20w/50 or the Merc 25/40
I would not use a dino 10/30 or 10/40.

Delo or Rotella 15w-40 HDEO and a Fram ultra filter(this combo recommended to me by a marine engine builder). Buy synthetic if you want to pay more money.

Fram filters are made of tissue paper can cardboard. Wix filters or Napa (wix rebrand) would be my recommendation.

Scott, you are misinformed. Fram ultra filters are one of the best on the market made with synthetic media fiber and wire backed mesh. I'm sure you are speaking of the bottom line orange can filter, in which case, you are comparing an escort to a lincoln. To the op. Go with what you are comfortable with.

You can go with the 51060. It's a great filter. Stay away from the xp series. Very poor filtration performance. Just things I've learned by being an oil/filter nerd over the last several years. You can learn anything you'll ever need to know about filtration and lubrication here: bitog.com.

Take your pick on oil. I run m1 15w50 in the boat. I've considered diesel oils as I already have it on hand, but haven't gone down that road.

As for filters, I run almost all napa gold.
