yoke problems on volvo

'99 volvo sx :Just been informed that my u-joint bellows was found to have gear lube inside due to a faulty yoke seal. They said the yoke was cracked and a replacement was around $400. Is that a fairly accurate price? Having been extremely careful with this outdrive (idle rpm's only when outdrive had to lifted for shallow water). No undue stress was ever put on the unit. I was very surprised this has occurred. Any thoughts on this or questions I should have with this diagnosis? Any attention to this would be appreciated. captpgn

Ayuh,... Never seen 1 Crack before,...
They tend to Wear where the seal rides, causing the oil in the bellows thing...

no yokes,crosses or input shafts avalible from volvo for the SX, the shaft assy is about 379 sitting on the counter and comes with a new bolt and crush sleeve.
takes about 2 hours to change the shaft assy if the unit is already on the lower unit stand.
you will also need a new seal and an input bearing box oring.
sierra does make an assy but the only two I tried took extensive work with a needle file to deburr the splines sufficiently to allow the yoke shaft to fit the splines on the driven gear.
wont try a third time.

I used a Sierra one once and it fit perfectly. Maybe I got lucky...

i have never seen or heard of one crack. if i were you i would request to see it personally. if its jsut a groove worn in and you put in a speedy sleeve

I intend to a inspect when I can get up to the repair shop. What's this speedy sleeve? Is it an effective option and provided an a quality seal? Thanks captpgn
