If the yoke seal has failed, allowing outdrive oil into bilge , is it possible for water to pass from bilge back into gimbal bearing also?

Yes, it's possible for the water to go from the bilge to the gimbal bearing, but not through the yoke seal. It would be coming from the bilge directly into the gimbal bearing only haveing a dust seal to slow it down. But don't forget, for it to get there, the water would have to be over the starter, and on some engines the alternator.

Chances are,...that Another Seal is letting Water Into the Drive,+ It's being Pushed Out thru the Yoke Seal.........

Re: yoke seal question

why do the yoke seals seem to fail often? Is it a bad design on drive or just normal?

Re: yoke seal question

mostly normal. its usually 1 of 2 things. either water got into the bellows and rusted the yoke or the seal grooved the yoke. oneday I may try to make a speedi sleeve for it but as yet I am lazy.
but I did make a tool to reposition the seal in the carrier by .030" and keep it square in the carrier to overcome a simple grooved yoke. if its a rusted seal surface its a replacement item.

Rodbolt,

Speedi-sleeve, or whatever the company name is now, does make one for the MerCruiser yoke. I used them over 20 years ago to help out customers.

what is a speedy sleeve? How does it differ from the yoke seal part?
