Yoke shaft end play

After replacing the oil seal in the drive shaft housing and after reassembly, I have about .006 end play in the drive yoke shaft. Is this typical? I torqued the yoke nut to specs of 7 lb. in. and the bearing spacer was moving
freely as called for in the Merc Manual. The ring nut is also torqued properly. I dont find any reference to end play in the manual.

96 Bravo III

Thanks

Hopefully, you have Merc manual #11, if so could you give me a page number of what you are working on? I don't think I'm understanding what your question is...... Sorry.

I do have Service Manual 11 and it is page 3A-42
and 3A-43. Basically I am trying to make sure
I have set the preload correctly for the double
bearing on the pinion gear. Got the Manual from you
and it is great to have.

Ok, that is what I thought you were doing, just wasn't sure.
First of all, the 7 in. lbs. is NOT a torque spech, it's a rolling torque (how much force it takes to turn the shaft.)
Re-read the instructions on pages 41 and 42 on setting the preload and look at the pictures.
When you tighten the nut down tight enough, the end play will stop and the proload torque will start. You really need to do the preload test first before putting any preload, and set the "Dial Type" torque wrench to 0. Then tighten the nut to get the 6 to 10 lb. in. rolling torque.
