One of the things I used to enjoy the most about working on boats was being able to share the "you won't believe this" stories that go around marina to marina.

This is one thing you can't make up. New boat owner, spent a whole lot of money on a beautiful 240 Searay, thought he was an expert and refused any assistance from us because everything he learned from books was all he needed to know.

Three days later the call comes in. Boat won't go as fast as it should, handling terrible, take it back and refund the money! Never should have dealt with you, etc etc etc.

So, the boss sends me down to the docks to check this thing out. While the "expert" was screaming and cussing about how we ripped him off I couldn't help but notice his nice new cruiser, tied to the dock in some sort of BDSM rig, still strapped down on the trailer!

That was six years ago and the oldtimers still laugh about it. I swear you can't make this stuff up.

Saw a " Mythbusters" on this topic....
Shocked to hear the boat dealer/mechanic actually delivered a boat on the water with a trailer under it intentionally!

"Trailer Troubles (Dumbest mistake on the high seas)

Myth: Boaters take the boat out but can't seem to get any speed out of it. They call a repairman to come check it out, who realizes that the trailer is still attached.

13' Boston whaler

Boat without trailer: 23mph

Boat with trailer: 4.7mph

Confirmed that this has happened at least once, but intentionally: had to deliver boat to a customer who didn't have enough room for trailer to get to boat ramp behind house.

Plausible"

Think how hard that would be to do, unhooking the trailer hitch on a ramp with all that tongue weight and pressure on the ball or even receiver pin......

The new owner backs the trailer with a 24 footer on it down the ramp, then unhooks the trailer wiring and safety chains and manages somehow to unhook the hitch and watches it all just roll on into the water. The bow strap and winch in full view the whole time.

Oldrenken79 says he was there. Should we have him take a polygraph test.

Do you know the difference between a fairy tale and a sea story?

One begins ......."Once upon a time."

The other begins......"Now this ain't no lie" (usually a bit more colorful)

If the boat was still strapped to the trailer, it's possible that there would be little tongue weight due to the boat floating.

I played that over and over when I found it a while back, stuff like that just follows him around somehow, too funny. Someone had pulled the receiver pin almost all the way out sometime before they backed down the ramp, he has too many people going in too many directions and changes things at the last moment and then Bloop-City!

yeah, if you will notice about half of his bloopers are jokes done by his staff............... it is still great though.

my favorite is when he is loading his boat and talking about being prepared and just before he gets turned around with the battery a guy pulls the boat forward............. i still laugh everytime i see it.

I watch that too. I still laugh every time he gets clothes-lined off of his ATV by the trees. The sound effects are priceless.

Re: You can't make this stuff up....

This story reminds me of one I experienced...not a boat story, but very similar.
My other passion is flying, and I've owned a few planes from time to time. One plane I had was a 1943 Taylorcraft L2M war bug (like a war "bird", meaning it was used in the war, but not a fighter or bomber. Just a CAP sub spotter). I owned it for a few years, and eventually decided to sell it. A museum in Ohio bought it from me, and I delivered it to them as part of the deal. When I delivered it, I tried to show the museum pilots all the ins and outs of the 50+ year old plane, but they refused to listen, and they just kept saying that one of their pilots was an original Taylorcraft L2M mechanic, and he "knew it all!" Never mind that a 50+ year old plane can develop all new equipment, methods, etc, as it ages/changes owners/changes equipment/etc.
The very NEXT DAY after I delivered it to them, I got an angry call from one of the directors of the museum. He said their "know it all" pilot accidentally started the plane with no one in it, and it flew away by itself, finally running into an electrical tower. The funny, or perhaps not so funny, thing was this director was trying to say this was MY FAULT! I directed him immediately to my attorney, but months later he called back and apologized.
