Almost 1350 posts,+ Believe it or Not, This is My 1st Thread........

I just had to Remove a "Poured in Place" block of rigid closed-cell foam, 24"x18"x29".... Nice Dry stuff.....
I Tried about Every Tool in my Shop.....
And, I have a Very Well Equipped Shop......
The Tool of Choice so far is an Old Ground Screw....... A Two Inch Cork-Screw, made out of 3/8s rod, about 15"s long with a Ring on the end..... Originally to hook your Dog to it....
I can screw it in about 2 1/2 turns,+ Still be able to Rip it out..... That leaves a hole about 2"x3"...
There's Alot of Little Holes in a block of foam that Big....
I Need the 29"s for Fuel.... The Engine is going where the fuel tank Was.....
The remaining foam is Dry,+ in compartments set high in the bilge.... Not Sealed,+ Well Drained.... I'll leave it, Unless it's in the way of something......

Ya, I Know... I Need a Camera....
I'll head over to tigerdirect or ebay,+ see what I can find.....

Re: You KNOW My love of Foam.....................

Well, if you ever need to do it again...rigid closed cell foam is easily removed with a saw-all. Quickly comes out in really big chunks. With a minimum of care, you can “feel” where the blade is to prevent damage to surrounding structures. To remove remaining bits of foam, a 2” steel wire cup in a hand drill works wonders. Fast! Removes foam and bounces off fiberglass. Wear appropriate dust mask and eye protection!!!

Sometimes there is a difference between "getting the job done" and "enjoying getting the job done." The corkscrew sounds like more fun. :) –joe

Re: You KNOW My love of Foam.....................

interesting tip Bondo. I'm just finishing up stripping some nice WET foam from the entire boat and what seemed to work decent as well was a drywall keyhole saw which cuts nicely, in combination with one of those small pry-bars (about 1 1/4" wide with a very slight curve and a 90* at one end) After getting a section started I found cutting was no longer necessary and that it was possible to pop out decent size chuncks of foam with only the pry-bar.

thanx 18rabbit on the wire brush tip I'm not too far along to utilize that one ;)

Re: You KNOW My love of Foam.....................

I used a large steel carpenters square (24x18"), pushed it through and popped the foam out in 6 inch sections, very fast and very easy. The easiest part of the rebuild...

Re: You KNOW My love of Foam.....................

Well Guys,
I Tried the Saw-zall, the BFHammer(claw), Several Prybars,+ Many other Implements of Destruction...
I Don't have the Floor out(it's in Excellent Shape),So, the hole I was working on was 18"X24"X 29"s Deep, Horizonally(Of course, in the Bottom of the Bilge, Stand on your Head Time)......
The Saw-zall(I even tried putting a Severe Bend in the blade),+ other Blade tools cut Real Well, but I couldn't make the Back-cuts to Remove the chunks... And moving it side to side was Impossible... Popping it was Not an Option, as there was No Place to Pop it Too....
I Love the Wire Wheel Idea.... I'll mount a small 1 in my Die-Grinder to see if I can get into some of the other 4 areas that are Still Foamed.....
" i see your havin' fun..!! " Darn Right, crab bait......Working on my boats is right up there just below Chasing the Queenie around the berth,+ Fishing.......
-Roger, I'm the Soda Bottle guy... Boomyal is the Ping-Pong Ball guy......
CTD, I Sure Wished I'd thought of this 1 before... I've got a Tiny Gas Saw, It probably would have Really been the Ticket.......

Re: You KNOW My love of Foam.....................

I second the shovel idea. I removed 99% of each rear block in one piece. Of course it was so wet it just kida popped and came out. I acutally had to cut it up to get the garbage men to pick it up.
