I had a friend?s wife make the following comment?

?You guys are awful proud of your boat, but it isn?t anything special to be proud of.?

Aside from the snobby way she said it she missed a few points.

Sure as a Sunbird she will not be a collector?s item anytime soon or ever. But she is something to my family.

-She is paid for

-It has brought our family together in so many ways, from working on it to trips in it. It has done a ton for our kids, my 2 and 3 year old come out to work, my 16 year does too and it is being used to teach her responsibility and seamanship, before she drives a car.

-It has given birth to other opportunities that our family is exploring in owning our own business.

So to someone else, it may not be anything; but to us BOFUS is a member of the family.

My friends wife doesn?t get that we went with something that we knew we could sell easily if our younger children didn?t enjoy being on the water.

Oh well some people just don?t get it.

A boat is a boat..

If if makes you and your family happy. Then it's something to be proud of.
Even if it was a 10 foot boat with oars. It doesn't matter.

Just tell them they are ugly then motor away while they are on the dock. :)
You'll be having fun...

With all the work I did on my boat. I've talked with people and they couldn't understand why I was putting all this work into a boat. "Just buy a new one", and "you have a lot of ambition for that boat". For one, I can't. I dont have the expendable cash to buy a new boat. 2, I rebuilt this boat from paycheck to paycheck and plasma donations. I had tons of fun working on the boat and my family loves being out on the water. (Boat still isn't complete, but sea worthy. Plus I love the comments when I get it on the water.

Some people just do not get it! Ours is no jem,but the wife ,myself and our 20 year old love it.. My son goes with us, I pull him in a tube, we fish, cruise around, or just go to where it is docked and hang out for a bit. It's about relaxation, good times and being together.believe it or not ,Josh, our son who is on his own will even post on his facebook that he spent the day or weekend with his rents(parents) and had a great time. So in closing who gives a rats a@# what this supposed or any friend has to say.Have fun and enjoy your times together as a family.Beats the heck out of sitting in front of a television all day.

Funny you should mention that. I just bought an old Sears 10' aluminum jon boat w/oars no more than 10 minutes ago for $100. Except for the rotted wood on the transom, it looks like it's been sitting for awhile(upside down thankfully) and hardly ever used. I bought it to recover R/C boats when they die in the middle of a pond. I think it will also be a blast messing around on small ponds and going on creeks w/electric motor.

Point being, no matter what you have, enjoy it. Who cares what anyone else thinks. As long as you like it, it may feel like a $50k boat to you.. Happiness is happiness. Usually, the people complaining don't even own a boat!

Sounds like jealousy or insecurity....My boat would likely fit in the same category according to her...It is 25 years old and a bit dated looking, but has near mint interior and great exterior. I'm very proud of it because of the way it has been maintained and the excellent service it has given me. The biggest repair I have made on it in the 14 years I have had it is a shift cable. It gives me a warm and fuzzy feeilng everytime I use it because it is so old, but still so good....I usually feel sorry for the snobs at the dock with a shiny, new boat and most likely a fat payment book to go with it....Of course, I guess they also look down on my truck when I pull it outta the water with a 16 year old Toyota.:D

Red,

I agree that boats, boating, boat repair, and generally talking boats amongst family brings us together.

Heck, Little M. started taking an interest at a very young age, helping do tune-ups on Dad's old Mercury. How cool is that, to have the family out in the drive, wrenching, washing, cleaning , prepping, and then go out for a cruise together.

My powerboat isn't anything special, but the times we have on it are.

As for you friends wife, well, she doesn't get it , and probably never will.

She is officially persona non grata..LOL

You guys are right, boating to me is like dirt bikes or street bikes; it is a fraternity of believers.

She's nothing special, either, and especially not special enough to go out on the boat again.

i think she is a douche. i feel sorry for your friend though to have to wake up to a person like that. eventhough if she owned it, it would be the best thing that ever was made. my uncle has a 12 ft aluminum with a little 5 or 6 horse on it. the motor is so old i think noah used it on the ark. the boat leaked from every rivet it has, but we have had good times on it and i have caught more fish in one day in it than i ever have in my life. 35 bass in 4 hours on lake shasta in northern cali. it wasnt about what it looked like it was spending time with my uncle, and we even had my nephew for a trip on the lake fishing. by the way my uncle outfished me that day, he got 37.

I would have responded in kind..

"You're awful proud of your wits, but they are not anything special...."

The best times I've ever had on a boat were on the worst looking boat ever. Totally smashed up tinny with a Evinrude 4 with no reverse. Spent many wonderful hours on that thing.

I really don't want a fancy looking boat as I have no interest in keeping it that way.

Ha ha that's how I feel about my car. I am much more comfortable parking my old minivan at Walmart than our nice suv even though they stole my hubcaps there. By the way it was a pic of the insulting lady.

Sry dude, I don't got a pic of my buddies wife...lol

I feel ya on the truck deal, I hate washing mine, like it to look worked in.

I do want a nice old wood boat though, I dig them. I once owned a Bullnose Cruiser but was way in over my head (she would not float and the engines were sitting in the barn) She needed a ton and sold her to the first guy that offered me what I thought it was worth. Wish I still had her now.

Re: Your boat isn?t anything special..

I have overheard some people wonder why I put the time and effort into rebuilding my boat. ?the idiot?. Of course, they are still paying for their new boats.

She does what I want it to do and when a couple of you?ll compliment me on the work, It makes my day.
