i found a 95 mariner for sale ..they guy says it is in excellent condition with probably less than 200hrs on it.. say he bought it from an estate of a old guy that never used it...he said he bought it to put on a project boat he had but when he put motor on transom it flexed too much ..so he sold boat and bought anoter one that came with a motor...so the mariner has been sitting in his garage on a stand for 2 yrs wihotut being ran...he paid $2k for it i could prob talk him down to $1600-1800...he says its looks great and has great even compression..he will do a compression check for me and run it on the stand when i go see it.....what ya think?...your thoughts on mariner's in general also....

If it checks out good, it's an excellent engine. I'm partial to I-6 115's though. If I was getting a Merc/Mariner I-4 it would be a 125.

ok i went and looked at it today...the guy pulled it out of the garage..hooked everything up and after a few turn overs it started up after sitting for a few yrs....after that intial startup it started right up as soon as you turned key.....i did a compression check on it...(i forgot to open throttle up) and compression was 110 psi even on each cylinder....we ran it on hose for awhile and it sounded great..motor was cool to the touch so seems like it had good water circulation and good pizz stream. went into forward/neutral/ reverse very smooth.

what has me worried is the 110 psi compression test...why would a motor with seemly low hrs have this low compression and then at the same time be even??only other thing i seen that was a problem with it was it would tilt going up..but when we tried to make it go down you would hear a click and it wouldnt go down...very small leak down on tilt that i could tell.

cosmetically it looked great cept for one spot has some rust next to anode.

the guy would not come down from $2000...i tried my best lol so what do ya think? is it worth it? i agreed to price already but i wont be picking it up till next week.....i been looking for motors for a couple weeks now and this one is best condition motor i found.....deal or no deal?
