Hello
Whenever some one fixes some thing it can be done wrong. If you don't have a suitable test tank you can only hope it's correct and works. With the price of gas now it may be a pain to drive to the lake to try something.
Look what marina's have to run an engine other than a lake. With enough property to build your own back in test tank (area) you can duplicate this behind your garage.
An outboard test wheel will permit you to run the motor at WOT with out throwing water all over.
Even freezing temps and buying concrete does no have to be a problem. Just pay some body with a back hoe or high hoe to dig out the area.

Hello
I did build one that works fine except here as most boards it's more popular to gab about instead of show the pic which I did not take. I owned my own backhoe so it was easy to dig it. It was dug in sandy soil which filled up over night with a garden hose. Just hooked the boat on and backed it in. Didn't even put a test wheel on. I learned how to back up using a hay wagon hooked to a tractor. So backing a two wheeled trailer is very easy.

How do you keep sand from being picked up by the impeller? Did you line it with plastic?

Hello
Sand in the water pump was never a problem because I never run the engne at WOT for more than a few seconds. If the tank was done in concrete this problem wouldn't exist. The sand in my soil doesn't mix very easily with the water. Lining it with plastic would be the cheap and fast way to do it.

Man, unless you're doing lots of fixins it is not worth it to dig a hole big enough to back a boat in. Would have big problem with the significant other when she comes home and there's a giant hole in the yard. :D I bought a big tote, about 4'x3'x2', and it worked fine. I installed a drain valve at the base. The tote and valve cost about 30 bucks and no pissed off wife.
