I am going to paint my 12 ft. aluminum jon boat with interlux interprotect 2000e as a primer and then interlux brightside polyurethane largo blue as a finish. i am not sure if i should use zinc chromate or not because the back of the primer can says nothing about needing an etching agent and the primer bonds well with aluminum, i am getting a 50/50 response from people. if anybody know whether i need it or not i would appreciate it.

thanks

I don't know if you need to etch aluminum but I did it anyway. Everything I have read about painting aluminum say the metal needs to etched. I bought an etching agent at a local auto body supply house. It was $11 for a quart. By the way I used the same paints and primers you are using.

You don't have to.

Wash the entire boat with a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water.

Use the correct primer.

I personally would use a zinc chromate primer. It's the best stuff we found to hold paint on aluminum in commerical applications....then the EPA stepped in :(
